Nexus for July & August 2019

Pastor Denise –

Greetings St. Andrew’s,

May the love, peace and joy of the Lord strengthen you and enrich your lives in the days and weeks to come.

“To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under Heaven.”

Summer is here!!! I love the change of the seasons. Each season is unique and brings to us its own gifts. Spring is the time of new beginnings, exciting opportunities, and anticipation of the future. It’s about potential, promise and possibilities. Summer is a time of growth and maturation. Seeds planted in the spring will hopefully take root and mature to produce a harvest in the fall. Summer is a season of work, when we invest the time and effort required to produce good fruit. Autumn is the season of harvest. In the fall, we see the reward of our labors. Then, many things draw to a close in winter. It’s the season of winding down, withdrawal, retreat, and even closure. But winter is also a period of rest, restoration, and reflection.

Once winter passes, another spring is at the doorstep. The prophet Isaiah proclaims, “Behold, the former things have come to pass, a new thing I declare; now it shall spring forth”.

I love that each new season brings yet another opportunity for God to touch the world in new and exciting ways. I am thrilled to be here at St. Andrew’s and for us to experience the coming seasons of God together.

I look forward to getting to know everyone, to share in the passions of your hearts, and to engage in ministry that brings God’s kingdom to our church and our community.

Peace and Blessings to all, Pastor Denise

SUMMER EVENTS –

Welcome Pastor Denise – On Sunday, July 7th we will have one worship service at 10:30 and following the service we will host our annual 4th of July picnic and welcome Pastor Denise Roberts to St. Andrew’s. Contact Robin Eagen for info at robineagen@gmail.com , Robin has been contacting folks to assign food to bring. If you have forgotten what she asked you to bring, or if you haven’t been contacted yet, please call Robin at 360-742-9846.

Youth Idaho Missions Project: July 6-13. About 15 youth for 5 churches will head to Idaho this summer for a great experience in service. We have 3 youth from our church attending this year! If you're interested in supporting our youth, you can still make a check out to SAUMC with "YOUTH IMP TRIP" in the memo line.

Parking Lot Paving: St. Andrew’s parking lot will be closed the week of July 15th-19th for paving. We ask that if you have church business to take care of please park on the edge of the grass along the front of the church and walk in to either end of the building. Please also remember to be flexible… the repaving is contingent on the weather. As long as the weather holds, we should have a beautiful safe parking lot in a few weeks.

R.E.A.C.H.: July 22 - Aug 15 (M-TH, 9-12). St. Andrew's once again will open its doors to give a reading boost to the children of our neighborhood. Registration for youth is available in the church office. If you'd like to join in volunteering with this amazing program of relationships and confidence building through reading, please see Barbara Clarkson. We will have a training for volunteers on Thursday, July 18th at 1:00pm, here at St. Andrew's.

FORKids Program

We are on Summer Break, but we are still collecting food and monetary donations to get ahead for the upcoming school year. (Please mark your donations “FORKids”.) Let’s see if we can collect enough donations to cover our first 3 months of food for Olympia View Elementary School kids. Below is a note from the Thurston County Food Bank FORKids organizers:

Hello All!

I have had some inquiries about how many kids we have served this year, and how many bags went out total. Below are the totals for the whole program! Over 57,000 bags were delivered this year! There is no way this program would exist without the support of amazing volunteers like all of you! Over 49% of the clients we serve here at the Food Bank are under the age of 18. Without all the help and support from individuals like you we would not be able to reach all these kids, and their families, with additional support. Our mission is to end hunger in Thurston County, and we can only do that with the support of the community as a whole. Thank you for everything you do for the kids, and choosing to volunteer for my program!

St. Andrew’s provided 2,952 bags to the families of Olympia View Elementary School this school year!

Let’s get started now so we can meet or exceed this goal for the upcoming school year!

Help us fill the weekend bags to feed kids with little food available when they are not in school. Pick up a red bag on the table outside of the sanctuary and donate items listed on the bags.

Ways you can help: donate food items, sorting the items donated, bagging the food and delivering food bags to Olympic View Elementary to the most needy children.

MOST NEEDED food items include:

Shelf Stable Milk (boxed milk)

Protein items (Chef Boyardee, Tuna Salad w/crackers, Vienna Sausages or Pepperoni Sticks

100% Real Fruit items (Fruit Cups, Boxes of Raisins or Fruit Juice Boxes)

Easy Mac & Top Ramen or Cup a Noodle

Small Individual boxes of cold cereal or individual packages of instant oatmeal.

Snack Items (Chips, Cheezits, Goldfish Crackers or Poptarts)

Music Notes –

Hello everyone,

While our music groups are on hiatus, I would like to again extend an invitation to everyone for special music and for anything that you might like to share (in the past, this has included poetry, dance, or something that might be special to you.) Please let me know soon, so that we can plan ahead through July and August.

I am looking forward to meeting and working with our new pastor—only days away now!

Thank you again for your support; give me a call, write, or speak with me at church and share your ideas and observations—I value your input, and I am certain that choir feels the same. Have a wonderful summer. – Paul Duncan

Thank you from Pastor Dirk –

Sisters and Brothers of St. Andrew's UMC,

I thought the last newsletter was the last I'd write to you, but because of your kindness and generosity on my final Sunday, I had to say one last thank you! The gifts, the words of affirmation, and your great love on June 16th blew Brittany and me away! It was such a wonderful farewell celebration, and we both want to say thank you. Your gifts were so heartfelt as you thematically gave right to one of my favorite things in life: Baseball! I will certainly treasure them for years to come! And your parting monetary gift was extremely shocking and extraordinary generous! I hope you read this as boldly and as loudly as words can express: THANK YOU!

As Brittany and I transition to a new house and to a new life, please know that you will continue to be in our prayers. You have been a loving and generous people, and I have no doubt you're already sharing that great love with Pastor Denise as well!

Great thanks and many blessings, Pastor Dirk & Brittany!

Children & Youth Ministries

Please keep our youth in your prayers as they go on their first Mission Trip to Idaho. Heather Seldomridge, Rebecca Wall and Liam Wall will travel with the South Sound Co-Op Group on this Mission Trip.

Quilters Update & Quilts for Sale!

The Quilters @ St. Andrew's spent an afternoon organizing an inventory of our lovely quilts. We decided to take advantage of an offer to create a QUILTS FOR SALE page on St. Andrew's web site. For those who like to shop from your recliner look for this opportunity to view (and purchase) some of the best and cutest quilts you have ever seen. The site is being set up now and will be available soon. In the meantime, we continue to have fun making new quilts to share with you. Regular meetings begin the 4th Tuesday in September. Please contact Barbara Ullmann with any questions.
